Moving house

Filed under: misc — Duchess @ 2:15 pm

Well, not quite.  Moving house implies another house to go to, or other grown up accessories, the kinds of things my elderly father calls “plans”.  (As in, “But what are your plans?”)

Although I have no plans, I have, nevertheless, suddenly acquired tenants and apparently they are not expecting me to be lurking in the back bedroom when they move in next month.  It seems they are also expecting my chattels to be gone.  Cupboards that haven’t been opened since 1984 need to be emptied.

Hands up who knows what a Teasmade is.

  1. A teasmade is a device for making tea automatically, which was once common in the United Kingdom and some of its former colonies. They generally feature an analogue alarm clock and are designed to be used at the bedside, to ensure tea is ready first thing in the morning. Although crude versions existed in Victorian times, they only became practical with the availability of electric versions in the 1930s. They reached their peak in popularity in the 1960s and 1970s, but have since declined to the extent that in the few places they are sold new, it is as a retro novelty item.
    Oh, okay – I Googled it. I never said I wasn’t resourceful.
Congratulations on renting – did you rent, or sell? – your house!

  3. It sounds like an adventure – taking tenants without “plans” for yourself.
Jan is showing off, but I learned what a teasmade is.

  4. Teasmades are retro? I’m so out of it. I always wanted one.

  5. Jan, I rented — though of course the minute I agreed a rental someone came along who wanted to buy. But in the end they wouldn’t meet me at even a knock down price, so I declined.
    Everything is in uproar.
Jane, I wanted a teasmade too, but somehow they are just not what you think you are getting. (Though, btw, Jan’s description is exactly correct, right down to the analog clock.)
In the first place, if you drink tea like a Brit you have to have milk at your bedside to serve the tea, and if you are an American you get all weird about letting it sit out all night.
And in the second place, the theory is that they make the tea and then the alarm buzzes and you wake up and pour your cuppa. But the fact is, they make so damn much noise making the tea (which takes a good 15 – 20 minutes) that you are long since awake and grumpy. By then you could have gone downstairs and made it yourself and avoided the unhygienic milk…
    I think that’s why they’re retro.

  6. Where are you going? This sounds serious. Hope you and your mother have a great time together.

  7. Ruth, I fear I take everything and nothing seriously. I don’t have any rational plans, but my mother will no doubt come up with something improbable that seems like a good idea for a while.
